Thank You To Our Readers! We’re Supporting The Planet Together — 1% Makes a Huge Difference—For the Planet

By Maxwell Ryan

At the heart of the holiday season, under all the lights and decorations and parties, is the spirit of giving: finding the perfect gift for a loved one, helping the less fortunate, giving back to your community. That spirit has been a part of Apartment Therapy from the beginning, and our biggest cause is, well, the biggest cause: the Earth.

Since 2007, since I first learned of Yvon Chouinard’s founding of this initiative—10 years!—we’ve been proud to be a member business of 1% for the Planet, a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving. Members like us pledge to give 1% of their pretax revenue—not profits!—to environmental organizations. Individuals can join too, by pledging 1% of their annual salary or net worth.

You, our readers, are the reason we’ve been able to support some incredible organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Sustainable Harvest International, and more recently The Peconic Land …read more

Why Restaurants’ Strength Is Also Their Danger — Personal History

By Ariel Knutson

Shortly after I moved to New York for college, I applied to be a hostess at Otto, Mario Batali’s Italian restaurant in Greenwich village. I was 19 years old. I had no interest in food or restaurant culture at the time, but I remember feeling that even if my job was just to greet and seat customers, that I was a part of something exciting. What I found was a new kind of family, with all the love — and toxicity — that can only exist in the tight-knit structure of intimacy.

Our Most Popular Slow Cooker Recipes of 2017 — Slow Cooker Recipes from The Kitchn

By Kelli Foster

There are few things the almighty Crock-Pot can’t tackle, but above all else it makes getting dinner on the table a whole lot more manageable on busy nights, and even helps us to serve up some healthier choices. I know I am not alone when I say that if it wasn’t for my slow cooker, there would have been many more nights of frozen pizza and takeout this year.

From stew and chili to takeout favorites at home, these were our top slow cooker recipes of the year.

By Emma Christensen

How many times have you found yourself in desperate need of pancakes, but without the requisite buttermilk in the fridge? The 3 Best Kitchen Makeovers We Saw This Year — The Best of 2017

By Lisa Freedman

The words “kitchen makeover” tend to imply a massive budget, hundreds of hours, and lots of blood, sweat, and tears. These three kitchen makeovers had none of those things. And that’s why we love them so much. They were all done on a DIY budget and were fairly easy to complete (easy for us to say, we know, but the homeowners all said so, too!). And the results are nothing short of amazing.

Check them out — here are the three most impressive kitchen transformations we saw all year.

12 Nogs, Punches & Libations to Celebrate the Holiday Season — Nogs & Punches

By Christine Gallary

Whenever I’ve hosted a holiday gathering, I’ve found that guests can sometimes have a deer-in-headlights reaction when I greet them with, “What would you like to drink?” This open-ended question can be a hard one for people, because they probably haven’t thought about drinks yet, they’re trying to figure out what you might have on hand, or they don’t want to ask for anything too complicated.

Once I switched to having a big-batch drink ready to go, it became much easier. Turns out that most of my guests are more than happy to start with what I’ve already made, as it takes the guesswork and awkwardness out of the equation. “Would you like some mulled cider? I’ve got some rum or bourbon for spiking too!” is also a much, much more fun way to start a party.

Whether you’re looking for something warm and fruity, cold and creamy, or boozy and bold, there’s a big-batch eggnog, slow cooker drink, punch, or pitcher drink just waiting to be served at your next holiday or New Year’s gathering. Cheers!

By Meghan Splawn

As we head into the holiday home stretch, we’ve got a week of guests, parties, and classroom holiday programs to fill up the calendar. If it were just the four of us as usual, I’d probably stick to a template of pasta, tacos, breakfast, and pizza, but with houseguests I want some dinners that are still fast and easy, but a little impressive too.

Here’s what I’m cooking and eating during a happily harried holiday week with houseguests.

A Menu for a Prime Rib Holiday Dinner — Menus from The Kitchn

By Meghan Splawn

Prime rib is the ultimate Christmas feast — a grand roast brought to the table with pride and served with a luscious creamy horseradish sauce. You could serve almost anything else on the side and your dinner guests would still be quite impressed, but since you’ve likely gone to great expense and effort for the roast, filling out the rest of the table should be both easy on the cook and the wallet. Here’s what to serve with a classic prime rib roast for a luxe holiday party.
